What is iCare?

iCare (Insurance and Care NSW) is a government organisation that funds care and support for people who have sustained serious injuries in motor vehicle accidents on New South Wales (NSW) roads, regardless of where they live.

That means if someone is injured in a car accident in NSW — even if they reside in another state like Queensland — they may be eligible for lifetime support funded by iCare. This includes services like rehabilitation, personal care, therapy, case management, and more.

Who is Eligible for iCare?

You may be eligible for iCare support if you have sustained a serious injury in a motor vehicle accident on an NSW road. This can include:

  • Spinal cord injury
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Amputations
  • Severe burns
  • Permanent blindness caused by the accident

Once accepted into the scheme, your care is covered for life — regardless of where you choose to live.

iCare Coverage Across Australia

A common misconception is that iCare only funds supports within NSW. In reality, iCare supports participants nationwide, as long as the injury occurred in a motor vehicle accident on an NSW road.

For example, someone injured in NSW may later move to Queensland — but their care remains funded under iCare. There is no need to transition to another scheme like the NDIS or NIISQ. Your iCare coverage follows you.

What Supports Can iCare Fund?

iCare funds a range of necessary and reasonable supports tailored to each participant’s injury and goals, such as:

  • Attendant care and personal support
  • Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation
  • Home modifications and assistive equipment
  • Medical and clinical support
  • Community access and independence support
